The founder, Mr.K.A.Velayudham's father had started this business in a very small-scale level at his residence, approximately in the year 1915 for a livelihood. They were making pappadom which dilate during frying, which was sold five to ten bundles a day with which they survived and later manufactured Appalam which expand nearly double the size ,which is having a self life for fifteen months without adding any preservative. Appalam is famous in Tamil Nadu, and it secured little income so Mr.Velayudham's father engaged some workers and trained them for making Appalam and pappadom.
Mr. K.A.Velayudham, he discontinued his studies up to seventh standard due to poverty and started to learn Appalam making, in the age of seventeen he was responsible for the family, and he made Appalam and sell them during second world war he hide under the bunker with his little stock struggled for sale to earn for the day living, Mr.K.A.Velayudham with four Annas capital he started the business and after that he bought a cycle, He began to sell his Appalam carrying on cycle, he coverd the area up to Thambaram. In the year 1945, Mr.K.A.Velayudham commercialized his business by making more Appalam appointing some labours. Mr.Velayudham opened a shop first at Mylapore and then in T.Nagar. The name and style became "AMBIKA APPALAM DEPOT" First only shop opened exclusively for Appalam and sold Appalam in packet.
In the year 1963, Ambika Appalam Depot had registered as a proprietary commercial establishment. Other food products like Snacks, Instant Food Powders, Vadaams, Vathals etc., were also sold in addition to Appalam business picked up at faster rate due to the quality of products. Ambika Appalam Depot attracted so many customers because of the delicious south Indian food products.
As the business gained momentum, customers from various places of Madras city started plowing to buy the Appalam from Mylapore. The business picked up steadily and the brand name "AMBIKA APPALAM" became familiar among the citizens of Madras city, this was how Appalam was established in Madras as a reputed Appalam manufacturer. Until this period the Appalam were being sold only in retail, but very soon the business transformed to be wholesale due to the active participation of the youngsters and the penetration of business into the neighboring cities.
Simultaneously, our other products, which are sold in our outlets, also gained momentum and the business expanded and a partnership came into existence. This day Ambika Appalam in marketing its products in India on a nation-wide well organized distribution system.
We are proud to say that we are the only firm manufacturing Appalam and other related South Indian food products hygienically using high-level technology. We occupy major market place in the field of Appalam manufacturing and supplying in a systematic manner through nationwide marketing using the expertise. We are the largest producer of Appalam from the raw material of urad dhal in India since 1920 traditionally.
There are three varieties (viz) appalams, pappadam and pappad. Appalam that is familiar in Tamilnadu as a specialty to expand nearly double the size during frying. Pappadam that is familiar in Kerala as its specialty to dilate during frying. Pappad that is familiar in North India as its specialty to bubbles on it after frying. We manufacture all these varieties in different flavors. We supply appalams in a first rate quality and the same wholeheartedly approved by the customers from 1920.
From the year 1990 onwards, the company started to export its products to overseas also. We are well known as "AMBIKA APPALAM DEPOT" and the name is being echoed throughout the world.
